Celebrating the Torch Bearers for Black Theatre: A Decade of Excellence

In the heart of New York City, amidst the hustle and bustle of Broadway, lies a legacy that has illuminated stages and inspired audiences for decades. This legacy is none other than the Torch Bearers for Black Theatre, a celebration of resilience, creativity, and commitment to the art form that has shaped communities and transcended boundaries.

On Monday, April 29, 2024, the Friends of Vivian Robinson proudly presents “A Decade of Torch Bearers for Black Theatre 2013 – 2023” at the historic Riverside Church. This event, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, will honor the trailblazers who have carried the torch of Black Theatre, igniting passion and sparking change along the way.

The Torch Bearers Ceremony is more than just an event; it is a tribute to the late Vivian Robinson, a visionary and champion of Black Theatre. Robinson, affectionately known as the Queen Mother Torch Bearer, dedicated her life to cultivating audiences for Black Theatre, ensuring its presence and prominence on stages across the country. Alongside her dear friend Mary B. Davis, Robinson attended countless performances, becoming a cornerstone of the Black Theatre Movement.

From Broadway to off-Broadway, from bustling cities to intimate venues, Robinson’s unwavering dedication left an indelible mark on the landscape of Black Theatre. Her legacy lives on through the Torch Bearers Ceremony, a tradition of passing the torch to individuals committed to preserving and advancing Black Theatre.

Among the esteemed Torch Bearer Pioneers are luminaries such as Woodie King, Jr., Lillias White, Andre DeShields, and Richard Wesley. These trailblazers have paved the way for future generations, embodying the spirit of excellence and innovation that defines Black Theatre.

The evening’s program will feature a keynote address by Voza Rivers, Chairman of the Harlem Arts Alliance, Inc., and will be masterfully guided by Bill Johnson, an award-winning actor and director. Attendees will be treated to live and video presentations showcasing the work of Jonathan McCrory, Reginald Lee Wilson, Lakai Worrell, Nambi E. Kelley, Chisa Hutchinson, and many more talented artists.

Join us for an unforgettable evening as we honor the commitment, creativity, and resilience that have defined Black Theatre for generations. This showcase promises to be a historic celebration of the enduring legacy and enduring impact of Black Theatre on the Broadway stage and beyond.
